Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Cheryl Newton’s enthusiasm for residential construction began when she was “shopping” for a summer home on Cape Cod with her parents. After they found the “almost perfect” house, the family spent many weekends renovating to improve their investment. It was from this experience that Cheryl knew she wanted to be an architect.
Cheryl earned her Bachelor’s of Architecture at the University of Miami, Florida and spent her last year as an exchange student at the Macintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, Scotland. That was where she met her husband Moray, who is also an architect.
Throughout college and her career, Cheryl has always focused on the “nature of the project” and its contextual relationship to its environment. She loves working directly with her clients and believes that her best ideas really aren’t hers at all, because they always come to her while talking with clients. She is also a strong supporter of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and sees the many benefits that preservation contributes to the environment.
After working for a year in Miami on the Criminal and Traffic Courthouse, Cheryl moved back to Connecticut with plans to start a family. She worked for a large firm in Glastonbury, where she gained knowledge in other large scale institutional projects at Hartford Hospital and The University of Connecticut. From Glastonbury she became a Project Manager at a smaller firm in Middletown. There she gained experience in all phases of the architectural process, from space programming and design through working drawings and construction administration. At that firm, Cheryl designed and managed several public school projects and gained a lifelong respect for teachers, administrators and of course, students. Cheryl will always believe the learning environment is one of the most important places in our community.
Cheryl began working for Jon Butler four years ago continuing her pursuit of having a larger role on smaller projects. The details in building custom homes, the bond between a homeowner and his or her home, and the fulfillment that architect and client have working together have made the past four years of her career her most favorite!
Eventually, the plans to start a family became a reality. Cheryl and Moray have two boys, ages 7 and 8 1/2. She and her family currently live in the Historic District on Main Street, in Glastonbury. Cheryl spends part of each week at Jon’s office in Black Point. Through the magic of technology, she works with him the remainder of the week from her home office in Glastonbury. She is truly grateful for the opportunity to practice architecture with Jon and wonderful clients, while having flexible time to balance family responsibilites.
